Frequents shady grassland, especially with scattered trees. Widespread in southern and central Europe; not found in Britain, southern and central Spain or southern Greece. Upperside very dark, especially hindwings. On underside hindwing each crescent and orange submarginal band encloses a small, round spot. Generally single-brooded, flying in June and July. In southern regions there is an extended flight season with two broods. Eggs laid in batches on foodplants, plantain, cow-wheat and speedwell. Larvae live and hibernate gregariously in a web on the foodplant, separating in spring.
